April 2009 Session Recap

History of NOBUG Recap

NOBUG was formed in May of 1996. It then held monthly meeting (copies of topics are posted on the web site) till the end of 2004.

At the end of 2004 the all of the existing NOBUG Officers (except the Treasurer and who is editing the web site and doing everything right now) ended - and there were no people who stepped forward to be nominated and elected as: President, Vice-President, and Secretary of this Oregon non-profit corporation.

As a result, there were no one left to plan future meetings -  thus no meetings -  or anyone to share the organizational needs to keep NOBUG functioning as a user group to support the software / hardware community in Portland, Oregon.

This left only one person to do everything thus NOBUG went into forced hibernation.

NOBUG has remained a legal non-profit by filing all the required paperwork and paying the $50 annual fee to the State of Oregon (the Treasurer did all that before so that continued) but the rest of the needs of running a user group was impossible for the one person to devote time to do all the other required work thus NOBUGwent into hibernation.

Electing a new set of officers

A new set of officers was put forth to run NOBUG at the April 2009 meeting:

  • President: Arnie Rowland
  • Vice President: Rob Boek
  • Secretary: Julie Aldridge
  • Treasurer: Tom Philo (existing)
  • A second meeting will be held on June 10, 5:30 PM at the Microsoft Office Room 600 at 1 Lincoln Center in Tigard (Next to Washington Square) to formally elect the new officers into NOBUG. If you wish to be involved in this election send an e-mail to tres@nobug.org and you will be notified as to the time and place of the next meeting.

Questions: E-mail any of the possible e-mails shown on the web site: PRES, VPRES, TRES - they all go to the same person right now anyway!

Last Offical Meeting: April 13, 2004

Location: DePaul Industries

Topic: Understanding Changes in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Speaker: Mark Harris, Lead Project Manager in the Windows Division in Microsoft
Mark Harris is a Lead Project Manager in the Windows Division in Microsoft, managing the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2.  He joined Microsoft 9 years ago as a Software Design Engineer testing the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) functionality on Windows NT 3.51.  After stints as Test Lead and Test Manager on Windows components such as RPC, DCOM, Intellimirror, System Restore, and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) for subsequent Windows releases (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003), he joined the Security Business Unit in his current position.

Session Slidedeck:

Session Description:
The changes to Windows Firewall, Automatic Updates, and the Windows Kernel make a secure, compelling environment for Windows customers, but may require modifications to be fully deployed in an enterprise environment.  This is a technical discussion of the changes in the service pack and what enterprise customers can do to be ready to deploy the service pack.   We will discuss the details of buffer overflow prevention, network protection, and patching technologies in Windows XP SP2 -- and the deployment mechanisms to control each.
