Session Description:

Microsoft has continually improved each subsequent release of its flagship database management software - Microsoft SQL Server.  SQL Server 2005, code name Yukon is no exception. In fact this particular release is quite important to Microsoft as the company attempts to penetrate large enterprises by providing enterprise class scalability, programmability, manageability, and security.   This session is designed to introduce new features in Yukon. Although this session would be considered a 100-200 level, participants are expected to be familiar with database technology and have some prior development experience.

Thanh Ngo (OJ) is an independent consultant from Portland, OR. He has been working in Information Technology for more than a decade and with SQL Server for more than 6 years. He is the author of QALite.Net, ObjectScriptr, and a co-author of RAC for SQL Server (www.rac4sql.net). He is a speaker for Croatia Summer 2003 SQL Server Academy hosted by Microsoft. He is an MCDBA, MCSE, and regular contributor on Microsoft SQL Server newsgroups and user forums which earned him the SQL Server MVP award in April 2002.

Topic: Understanding Changes in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Speaker: Mark Harris, Lead Project Manager in the Windows Division in Microsoft
Mark Harris is a Lead Project Manager in the Windows Division in Microsoft, managing the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2.  He joined Microsoft 9 years ago as a Software Design Engineer testing the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) functionality on Windows NT 3.51.  After stints as Test Lead and Test Manager on Windows components such as RPC, DCOM, Intellimirror, System Restore, and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) for subsequent Windows releases (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003), he joined the Security Business Unit in his current position.

Session Description:
The changes to Windows Firewall, Automatic Updates, and the Windows Kernel make a secure, compelling environment for Windows customers, but may require modifications to be fully deployed in an enterprise environment.  This is a technical discussion of the changes in the service pack and what enterprise customers can do to be ready to deploy the service pack.   We will discuss the details of buffer overflow prevention, network protection, and patching technologies in Windows XP SP2 -- and the deployment mechanisms to control each.

Unwanted email is no longer just a nuisance. The rising tide of unsolicited commercial email (spam) is a major concern and cost for many organizations. Administrators can use the anti-spam features of Exchange Server 2003 to reduce the amount of spam entering their organization's mail networks. See how Outlook 2003 working together with Exchange Server 2003 lets end users control spam in their mailboxes.

Session Description:
Introduction to Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003

Check out the exciting new things happening in Microsoft's Training and Certification programs, including Microsoft Certified Desktop Technician (MCDST) curriculum and certification, a new e-Learning Web site and courses, new training benefits provided through Microsoft's Software Assurance program, new security clinics, and new Windows Server 2003 clinics.

Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Food and refreshments is served at every meeting courtesy of the meeting host for NOBUG members and paid attendees.  Social mixer half hour starts at 6 PM. Meeting at 6:30.  Only annual paid members are eligible for raffle prizes.  Individuals who join NOBUG after January 31 do so at the prorated rate. $10 less for each month that has occurred already.  Business Membership is only $150 !

DePaul Industries is at the intersection of Alberta St. and MLK Blvd.
From I-5, take exit 303 (Alberta Street). Head East from the freeway
until you get to MLK. Cross MLK and park in the parking lot on the SE
corner (enter from Alberta).

From the West (Hwy 26, 405, etc.), take 405 North until it merges with
I-5. Take the first exit after the merge (exit 303). Proceed as per I-5.

From the East, take Hwy 84, merge onto I-5 North, proceed as per I-5.
Alternatively, take Hwy 30 west until you reach NE MLK Jr. Blvd. Turn
left (south), and proceed to Alberta St. Turn left (east) and park in
the first parking lot on your right.

From downtown Portland, you can either jump onto Hwy 405, or cross any
of the bridges and head north on Grand Ave. Grand will merge with MLK
Blvd. Proceed north to Alberta St. Turn right and park in the first
parking lot on your right.

 As always, we ask our presenters to be as vendor neutral as possible so that the topic is of the greatest value to our members.
